The importance of cleaning and preparation in the refinish process

7/06/16

It is vital in the refinish process to make sure all surfaces, body panels, spray booths and equipment is kept clean and dust free before applying any paint to the repair. Effective preparation allows for the best possible finish, as well as reducing the repair time by avoiding paint defects.

It’s important to maintain a tidy work area in all areas of the bodyshop as less clutter will avoid dust settling quicker. Keeping equipment clean such as polishers, cloths and spray guns will make each step easier and quicker for the refinisher when preparing panels for spraying. Also when spraying in the booth, be sure filters are checked and cleaned regularly to avoid causing incorrect air supply, extraction and pressure.

Once all relevant equipment and work space is clean, its time to prepare panels to be painted. To begin with spray D8401 Waterborne Pre-Cleaner and wipe over with a Bodyline Pre-Cleaning Cloth, this should remove all contaminants from the surface, such as tree sap, hand salts etc. Then use D837 Solvent Spirit Wipe to remove any solvent borne contaminates such as road tar, petrol and diesel residue. Once wiped off, then blow air over the panel using a partially triggered Bodyline Spray Gun and wipe with a Tack Cloth to ensure any dust particles are removed.

When cleaning plastics this process should be followed by wiping with Bodyline Anti-Static Wipes this ensures any static charges that have built up during the cleaning process are removed.

When using a pre-cleaner do not allow the cleaner to dry on the panel. Cleaners are designed to float contaminants to the surface and then be wiped with a clean, dry cloth. If it is not completely wiped dry before painting, wipe marks may be evident in the finished film. This may lead to paint failures such as blistering and adhesion loss.

Whether you use cleaner from an aerosol can or a pump applicator, always apply utilizing the "Spray on / Wipe off" procedure.

Following these steps will ensure a first class repair and exceptional finish, whilst reducing process time and increasing throughput in the bodyshop.
