The challenge that will see the team cycle from Brown Brothers branch in Avonmouth to Weston-super-Mare and back on the 11th June 2016.

Taking part in this tremendous challenge is Mark Taverner, Chris Pennell, Daljit Poonia, Richard Morrision and Gary Saunder from PPG, joining them will be Andy Pope and David Coombe from Brown Brothers along with a whole host of customers.

The team will be cycling on behalf of M-CM UK.

M-CM UK is the charity supporting families and individuals with Macrocephaly Capillary Malformation(M-CM) or Megalencephaly Capillary Malformation (MCAP) across the UK.

M-CM/MCAP is a complex overgrowth syndrome that is caused by a genetic mutation that happens after conception, it is not usually inherited and it affects every individual differently. People with M-CM/MCAP usually have a range of challenges that can include both physical and cognitive developmental delay, the severity of which can vary greatly from individual to individual. Common features of the syndrome include macrocephaly, body asymmetry, low muscle tone, lax joints, learning difficulties and other neurological problems such as seizures and brain abnormalities.

M-CM/MCAP is very rare, it is currently estimated that there are less than 200 people worldwide diagnosed with the syndrome. In practical terms this means that not only is there great variability in the knowledge and understanding of the syndrome amongst doctors and other health professionals but also in the ease at which patients can access testing, monitoring and therapy to help with the condition.

M-CM UK is a new charity, established in late 2015 and they want to reduce this variability.

Their main charitable aims are to:

  • Build awareness of M-CM/MCAP throughout the UK
  • Provide a strong patient voice in research
  • Provide support to individuals and families with a diagnosis of M-CM/MCAP

They do this by:

  • Representing families and individuals with M-CM/MCAP at meetings, seminars and conferences
  • Communicating latest research and developments to families across the UK
  • Coordinating the involvement of families in research to help inform the future direction and ensure that their experiences are shared with researchers
  • Working in collaboration with other patient representative groups within the UK and worldwide

Everyone at Brown Brothers would like to wish the team the best of luck with the challenge and if you would like to support the team, please click on the link below to donate.
